10MILA 2020 will be postponed or cancelled

This year's 10MILA was scheduled to be held on May 2-3 in Kungsängen. Now it has been decided that the competition will either be postponed or cancelled.

In an attempt to reduce the spreading of the corona virus, practically all upcoming major events have been cancelled or postponed. After the Swedish government has prohibited any form of meetings with more than 500 people, the Swedish Orienteering Federation (SOFT) has decreed to limit competitions to a maximum of 300 participants, all of which must either be residents of the corresponding district, live nearby, or are active members of local clubs.

10MILA is a major event with more than 1000 teams from all parts of Sweden and abroad.

In light of the situation, it has become increasingly unlikely that 10MILA can be held in May, which is why it has been decided that the event will either be postponed or cancelled.

"This is a very disappointing decision to make, but we had no other choice," says Christer Nordström, chairman of Föreningen Tiomilakavlen.

Discussions between 10MILA and SOFT are ongoing. It is not yet clear whether it is an option to hold the event at a later date, such as in late summer or autumn. The financial impact for the clubs and participants also needs to be taken into consideration.

The aim is to be able to announce a final decision as soon as possible.

Since 1945, when the event was first held, 10MILA has only evey been cancelled once. It was in 1962 that a jaundice epidemic stopped the race. In 1993, the competition could not be held as planned and was moved to the autumn.
