Tiomila- an equal relay
Three night legs for the women and five legs become seven in an important step towards equality in Tiomila.
Tiomila is the orienteering competition that start in day light via dusk into the night and is decided in the early morning hours. It has been like that since 1945 and shall continue that way. As time goes by, adaption to today´s society is a must and we are therefore proud to present an equal Tiomila for both men and women with a premiere in Nynäshamn 2024.
When dusk has become night at Saturday it will be premiere for night legs, three of them, in the women´s relay. But earlier in the afternoon, the men have run three legs in day light. After the initial three legs in each relay there will be a shorter break before the men´s relay restarts with a chasing start, and that with the mystic “långa natten”. The men´s relay continues during the night and is decided by a last leg in day light during the early morning hours.
The women´s restarts their competitions when dawn has become morning with a chasing start and “långa dagen” as first leg. It continues after that with another three legs in day light and the finish is expected in the morning. For those teams that ends up a bit behind the fastest teams on the first three legs there will be a wave start with to retain the relay feeling as long as possible.
– Through this changes we not only take a big step towards equality but also towards a Tiomila-weekend with full attention and focus on respective relay with a minimal overlap between the relays, says Martina Sundberg, chairman in Tiomailföreningen. As usual, the weekend starts with a youth relay at Saturday.
